Next-generation CyberKnife 8.5 Increases Accuracy, Reduces Treatment Time

BOULDER, Colo. – Rocky Mountain CyberKnife, which opened in 2003 as the first CyberKnife center in Colorado, has completed an upgrade to the next-generation CyberKnife® system, providing Colorado residents the most advanced form of cancer treatment with the world’s first and only robotic radiosurgery system.

CyberKnife 8.5, the next-generation machine, features a higher energy source than Rocky Mountain CyberKnife’s previous machine, allowing physicians to make more precise calculations of radiation doses. CyberKnife 8.5 also includes a device that controls the size of the radiation beam, providing reduced treatment time and greater protection of normal tissue. Treatments with the CyberKnife are typically completed in one to five visits depending on the number and size of tumors.

“As the first CyberKnife center established in Colorado, our team has an extraordinary depth of experience,” said David Pflueger, Rocky Mountain CyberKnife administrator. “Our recent facility upgrade to the CyberKnife 8.5 exhibits our commitment to staying on the leading edge of cancer treatment and ensures we are providing our patients with the most advanced technology available.”

The CyberKnife 8.5 tracks and destroys benign and malignant tumors in the body while accounting for changes in location due to breathing and normal internal movements. An alternative to, or a complement for, traditional radiation therapy, the machine has the ability to deliver precise beams of high-dose radiation to a wide range of locations, including those in the brain, spine, lung, liver, pancreas and prostate. The CyberKnife is entirely noninvasive, painless, requires no anesthesia or recovery time and allows patients to return immediately to normal activities. Additionally, its sub-millimeter accuracy eliminates damage to healthy tissue surrounding a tumor site.

Located in Boulder, Colo., Rocky Mountain CyberKnife is a service of Boulder Community Hospital and is a US Radiosurgery facility, a national leader in innovative health care and research-driven protocols.
